Planting and Accummulating: Symbols and Objects
Gabrielle Zemaityte-Travis is an artist and cultural programmer based in South East London, having lived and worked in the UK since 2010. Zemaityte-Travis holds an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London and a BA in Fine Art from Middlesex University. She first studied at Alytus Art School and Vilnius Vienožinskis Art School, under Arūnas Gudaitis and Eglė Vertelkaitė.
Gabrielle Zemaityte-Travis’ practice deals with anthropomorphism of non-human entities, plants, objects, and technologies. It’s characterised by her Baltic heritage, animated worldview, ideas of theatre, and global strategies of visual merchandising. When making video installations and photographic work based on themes of personification, she is focusing on how human anxieties are represented in mythology and in discourse with non-human entities. In the past, she has developed a series of video works in which an imagined AI attempts to empathise with the positions of the Serpent and Spruce characters from the Lithuanian mythological tale Eglė, Žalčių Karalienė (Eglė, Queen of Serpents). Between 2021 and 2025, she also worked on a digital artwork that deteriorates with every viewing, Degrading Video.
Her recent work has increasingly turned towards symbolic forms and material processes, investigating how images, stories and objects accumulate meaning over time. Taking inspiration from the fact that the Mother of Thousands houseplant is commonly referred to as a “slut plant” in Lithuanian, Gabrielle Zemaityte-Travis developed a photographic series by placing descriptions of the physical conditions that cause the plant to behave in particular ways alongside images of the plant. The meaning of these descriptions is implied rather than explicitly stated, creating a space for associations between language and the projection of human characteristics onto non-human entities.
Gabrielle Zemaityte-Travis has exhibited in the UK and internationally, including Somerset House (2025), VSSL Studios (2024), Kabinett Gallery, Berlin (2025-2026), The Wrong Biennale (2023-2024), The Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad, India (2023) and Pamenkalnio Gallery, Vilnius (2021). She currently co-runs Deep Focus, an artist moving image platform, alongside Jael Arazi, Shira Bar, and Ursula Pelczar and is Head of Operations at London-based arts production company – KitMapper. For The Good Neighbour video, Gabrielle Zemaityte-Travis is inviting us into her studio and her world of plants in her magical South East London workspace.
